The Kiwanis club of Umatilla was founded in 1936. Membership (currently 55 members) includes retired and currently employed men and women from all walks of life. We are a part of Kiwanis International, a thriving organization of service and community-minded individuals supporting children and young adults. Our club responds to the needs of our community through it's sponsorship of local youth activities.
Our club is a member of the Kiwanis International Florida District Division 9, which consists of 14 associated clubs in Lake County and an Umatilla Kiwanis member, Skip Babb, is the division 9 Lt. Governor this year, as was his father in years past.
Our major projects are:
Purchase of playground equipment at Larkin Park, 4 - $2000 scholarships each year to Umatilla High School graduates, funds and judging for local school science fairs, ticket and gate service at Umatilla High School football home games, flag service on Route 19 in Umatilla on holidays, donating dictionaries to third graders in the Umatilla area, and funds for numerous local youth organizations including programs and books for the Umatilla Library. We sponsor of the leadership oriented Key club at Umatilla High school, the Builders club at the Spring Creek Middle school plus Terrific Kids club at Spring Creek Elementary school. We also support the STEM programs at Umatilla Elementary school.
Our fundraisers are a BBQ dinner in the fall at the Umatilla High School, a 5K run in Umatilla, separate raffles for a shotgun and a bicycle, a golf tournament in association with the Umatilla Chamber of Commerce, a prayer breakfast, grants from Florida's natural and contributions from our Umatilla members;
The Umatilla Kiwanis Club partners with Kohl's department store in Tavares which offers a 20% discount for our purchasing of clothing early in the fall and later in purchasing Christmas gifts for children in need.
'Florida's Natural, headquartered in Lake Wales Florida, with a local plant in Umatilla, supports local communities and for the last 6 years starting in 2009, has awarded a yearly grant to the Umatilla Kiwanis Club, the latest $8,000 for 2015 for a total of $32,000 which are used for a number of Umatilla area children projects.
These projects vary each year but overall provide funds for the Boys and Girls Club, SunRise Arc, Umatilla High School scholarships, Umatilla Library children books and programs, Spring Creek and Umatilla schools science fairs, 2 robot teams, school rocket and science competitions, kids clothing projects, and High School Key club leadership programs,
Florida's Natural continuing commitment to Umatilla youth and the community as a whole is greatly appreciated. These funds allow the Umatilla Kiwanis club to significantly increase our yearly contributions for worthy projects which exceeds well over $25,000 each year. As can be seen, the Umatilla Kiwanis Club is also heavily involved in science oriented and leadership school projects as we feel that our nations future is deeply dependent in this areas.
The Umatilla Kiwanis Club has a Foundation which is a 501c3 tax exempt corporation and donations are greatly appreciated for area youth programs. A 501c3 foundation was a part of the overall requirement for receiving a Florida's Natural grant.
